Change emphasis without breaking the scene

Relighting a single photograph is an approximation because the system cannot observe hidden geometry or the complete material response of the scene. The most believable result respects the direction already suggested by the face, objects and background instead of treating light as a flat brightness filter.

Read the existing light first

Before moving any control, identify the brightest side of the subject, the direction of cast shadows and the color of ambient light. Place the new light in a direction that the visible geometry can support. Large directional changes are harder to believe because an edited highlight may move while the original shadow stays fixed. Start with low intensity and increase strength only after the overall direction feels coherent.

Inspect materials separately

Skin, metal, glass, fabric and matte walls respond differently. Watch for uniformly bright surfaces, clipped facial highlights, glowing hair edges and reflections that no longer point toward a plausible source. Compare the subject with the background: a strongly relit face inside an unchanged dark room can look pasted in. Neutralize the color temporarily to judge contrast before deciding whether a colored light improves the scene.

Review at delivery size

A subtle lighting discontinuity may be acceptable in a small social graphic and obvious in a large portrait. Switch between the original and result at the same size, then step away from local details and check the visual hierarchy. The edit should guide attention without changing identity or hiding important product features. Keep the source because repeated relighting passes can compound contrast and color artifacts.
